John Hartley (tennis player)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Thorneycroft Hartley (Born January 9, 1849 in Tong, Shifnal, Shropshire – died August 21, 1935 in Knaresborough, Yorkshire) was a tennis player from England, and the only clergyman to win Wimbledon Championships.

Hartley did so in 1879 by beating Frank Hadow (walkover), and in 1880 by defeating Herbert Lawford: 6-3, 6-2, 2-6, and 6-3. An Oxford graduate, he was extremely steady, unerring, but overwhelmed in the 1881 Wimbledon Men's Championship to William Renshaw: 0-6, 1-6, and 1-6.
