In the film Star Trek: Generations Captain John Harriman (played by Alan Ruck) is the commanding officer of the USS Enterprise-B. In the film, Harriman commands this Enterprise on its maiden voyage out of the Earth spacedock with a complement of reporters and veteran Enterprise officers Captains James T. Kirk and Montgomery Scott, and Commander Pavel Chekov.
[edit] Generations
The Enterprise's maiden voyage is interrupted by a distress call from two El-Aurian refugee transports caught in a mysterious energy ribbon. Despite the Enterprise being sorely under-equipped and undermanned, Harriman orders the ship to intercept the transports. The Enterprise arrives too late to save one of the transports, but on Kirk's advice, Harriman moves in close enough to use the transporters to rescue forty-seven El-Aurian refugees from the second ship. However, the Enterprise itself becomes caught in the ribbon. When Scotty determines that a specially-configured burst from the main deflector can disrupt the ribbon long enough for the ship to escape, Harriman volunteers to go below decks to make the modifications. However, Kirk reminds him that his "place is on the bridge of [his] ship" and makes the modifications himself. Although Kirk is successful and the Enterprise escapes, an energy tendril lops off a portion of the stardrive section, including the area where Kirk is. Kirk is lost in the incident and presumed dead (Star Trek: Generations).
[edit] Apocrypha
According to the non-canon Lost Era novel Serpents Among the Ruins, Harriman remains in command of the Enterprise for nearly twenty years and develops a reputation as an excellent and capable officer. Harriman stands down as captain of the Enterprise after the Tomed Incident of 2311 and is succeeded by Demora Sulu.
The non-canon game Star Trek: Starship Creator by Simon and Schuster Interactive has Harriman as one of the characters who can be assigned to one of the various positions on ships that players build. In a nod to Alan Ruck's role as Cameron Frye in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, the game lists Harriman as a native of Chicago, Illinois with a wife named Sophie, a son named Ferris, and an interest in 20th Century sports cars.
