John Evershed

John Evershed (1864 – 1956) was a British astronomer. He was the first to observe radial motions in sunspots, a phenomenon known as the Evershed effect.
Evershed was born in Gomshall, Surrey on February 26, 1864. He made the discovery which bears his name in 1909, and in 1918 was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society. He died in Ewhurst, Surrey on November 17, 1956.
The Evershed crater on the Moon is named in his honor.
