John E. Peterson (born December 25, 1938) is a Republican politician from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Since 1997, he has represented the state's mainly rural 5th Congressional district (map) in the U.S. House.

Peterson was born in Titusville, Pennsylvania, and he enlisted in the United States Army upon high school graduation, eventually earning the rank of Specialist Second Class. He attended Pennsylvania State University, from where he earned a business degree. For 26 years, Peterson operated a grocery store in Pleasantville, Pennsylvania.

Peterson was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Republican in 1977 and he was elected to the Pennsylvania State Senate in 1984. Peterson was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1996. He has been re-elected four times without a Democratic opponent, most recently in 2004.

John Peterson currently serves on the powerful House Appropriations Committee. He is also a member of the Resources Committee and the Labor, Health, Human Services, and Education Subcommittee.
