John E. Fogarty

John Edward Fogarty (March 23, 1913 - January 10, 1967) was a Congressman from Rhode Island for 26 years.

He was born in Providence, Rhode Island. His brother, Charles Fogarty, Sr., was a State Senator and Director of the Rhode Island Small Business Administration. His nephew, Charles J. Fogarty, is the current Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island, and a candidate for Governor in 2006.

He attended La Salle Academy and Providence College, apprenticed as a bricklayer in 1930 and rose to become president of Bricklayers Union No. 1 of Rhode Island.

He was elected as a Democrat in 1940, and served until his resignation on December 7, 1944, to enlist in the United States Navy. He was reelected in 1944, and served until his death in Washington, D.C., on January 10, 1967; interment in St. Ann’s Cemetery, in Cranston.

John Fogarty Memorial Hospital in Woonsocket, Rhode Island is named after him.
