John attended the University of Florida in Gainesville and played for their american football team the Gators but left there in 2000 to concentrate on his athletics career.

He had previously made the final at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, but trailed in eighth after thinking there had been a false start. At the IAAF Norwich Union Indoor Grand Prix held in February 2006 he tested positive for a cannabinoid. [1]
