John Calvin Stevens

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Calvin Stevens (1855-1940) was an American architect who designed residences in two divergent styles, the Shingle Style, of which he was an originator in the 1880s, and the Colonial Revival style, which dominated United States domestic architecture for the first half of the 20th century. His designs can be found along the Maine coast as well as in Portland, Maine and its suburbs.[citation needed] He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and moved to Portland, Maine at the age of two.

Stevens was also a landscape painter who exhibited with the Boston Art Club, the Portland Society of Art and others.
