John Atherton was an explorer of the Far North Queensland area of Queensland, Australia. He was born on August 9, 1837 and died on May 16, 1913.
[edit] Childhood and early life
John Atherton was born in Lancashire, England and was the second son of nine children. Prior to heading north, John gained experience in farming sheep, wheat and other mixed crops on the family property at Armidale, New South Wales.
