John Altman (born March 2, 1952 in Reading, Berkshire, England) is an English actor best known as "Nasty" Nick Cotton in the popular BBC soap opera EastEnders.

John Altman started his career making brief appearances in movies including Quadrophenia, Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi and An American Werewolf in London. In 1979 he played musician George Harrison in the biopic TV movie Birth of the Beatles.

He then became famous and was best known as Nick Cotton in the BBC television soap opera EastEnders. He appeared in the first episode in 1985 and has left the series no less than five times, but has not appeared since 2001.

The role gave him much fame and he was known as one of EastEnders most well-known villains for phrases such as "Hello Ma".

Altman also featured in a 1982 public information film, "Stupid Git, John Altman" [1], part of the British government's campaign against drink-driving.

In 2001 he won the award alongside Claire Sweeney for Rear of the Year.

Since leaving Eastenders in 2001 he made an appearance in Bo Selecta as Nick Cotton and appeared in the direct-to-video film Hell To Pay in 2005.
