wikipedia is meant fo the reader

it seems many times wikipedians lose sight of who they are serving- the people who are actually reading wikipedia. amidst the sea of "Good Articles", "Stubs", "Copyright Disputes" and the imfamous "Notability disputes", it often feels as if this place is just a big game between editors. for example, imagine yourself back in the days of yore leafing through a big comfy enyclopedia brittanica. let's say you need to learn about, oh i don't know, Baku, Azerbaijan. now that the authors of the book are out of sight and mind, which would you rather have- an all encompassing, lengthy and well layed out article discussing everything one might need to know on the topic, or a notice saying "This page had been deleted due to restoration of deleted content and may not be recreated until (totally arbitrary date at which point the needs of the readers for information on the subject will not forseably change for any reason)." now imagine hordes of people actively campaigning to keep the article from coming back into existence. something like that probably isn't gunna happen for a major world capital, maybe just some obscure band or radiator manufacturing company that you heard about. nonetheless, you would like to read up about it a bit more. which would you, as the reader, rather have access to- a brief article outlining the main points of the subject, or nothing at all? you must choose one.

see now, that's the problem with wikipedians- if they see something that (although it is verifiable, without a doubt of some vague use to someone, and [here's the punchline] not really doing much of anything in the way of harm) is not up to their standards of "notability" (which is in itself extremely subjective and pov), they will take it as a personal offense. rather than leave a harmless little article who did nothing but try to help people and be a useful part of the wikipedia project alone for those with specific needs to peruse, they clamp down their jaws and do not let go until this menace to civilized society is gone. the worst thing to hear on wikipedia is "gee i was looking for this, but it's too bad someone deleted it", and that sure as hell is not what this endeavour was set to do.

bottom line- wikipedia is written to be as helpful as possible for those who read it. breaking an article into sections, whining over inclusion of relevant content one deems "silly", and deleting things that people want to know about have no part in that. adding (verifiable) material helps articles. scattering and deleting it does not.
