Joel Santana

Joel Natalino Santana, usually known as Joel Santana (born on December 25, 1948, in Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil) is a manager and former football player.

One of his greatest achievements in his career as a football manager is his Campeonato Carioca titles. Joel Santana is one of the few managers who succeeded to win the competition with each one of the four big clubs of the state (Botafogo, Flamengo, Fluminense, and Vasco da Gama).

Joel Santana usually plays in a defensive style, and his main objective is preventing his club from suffering goals [1].

In 2004, he successfully helped Vasco da Gama from being relegated to the second division of Campeonato Brasileiro. In 2005, he was hired by Flamengo with the same purpose.

During his career as a player, in the 1970s, he was a central defender, and had no caps. In 1980, he retired as a player, and became a manager.

As a manager, Joel Santana coached several clubs. In several seasons he managed clubs from the Arabian Peninsula (Saudi Arabian and United Arab Emirati clubs). In 2006, he began coaching Vegalta Sendai, in the J. League of Japan.
