Joel Miller
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Joel M. Miller (b. 1943) represents District 102 in the New York State Assembly, which is comprised of Hyde Park, Fishkill, Poughkeepsie and La Grange, among other communities located within Duchess County, New York.
Miller served in the United States Air Force on active-duty from 1967-1969, remaining in the Air Force Reserve as a Captain until "approximately" 1977. He is currently a Major in the New York State Guard.
After returning to New York in 1969, Miller established a dental practice in Poughkeepsie, which he maintained for the ensuing three decades. He served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Duchess County Dental Society for 26 years. He served as Treasurer of the same organization for five years and was its President for two years. He was once the President of the Mid-Hudson Dental Management and Marketing Corporation and is still a member of its Executive Committee.
In 2006 he decided to forgo a possible contest for the Conservative Party of New York State endorsement in this year's general election, ceding that party's line to Helen Westover, a pro-life candidate who was attempting to force a primary for that party's ballot line.
Miller conceded that he would have been an underdog in any potential primary, describing Westover as a candidate who holds "narrow views," which he implied would be rejected by voters in the general election.
In November he will face, in addition to Westover, Democratic opponent Joel Tyner, a Duchess County legislator, whose views he characterized as "extreme in the other direction." [1]
Miller holds a B.S. from the City College of New York, as well as a D.D.S. from Columbia University's School of Dental and Oral Surgery.
