Joe Flanigan (born January 5, 1967, in Los Angeles, California, United States) is an American television actor who has had guest roles in numerous television series, including Profiler, First Monday and Sisters. He is currently starring in Stargate Atlantis.

[edit] Early life

Joe Flanigan grew up on a small ranch near Reno, Nevada in the United States. From the age of 14 he attended a boarding school in Ojai, California where he appeared in the school's production of A Streetcar Named Desire. He later attended the University of Colorado where majored in history and appeared in Coriolanus. He spent a year studying at the Sorbonne in Paris.

After graduation he pursued a writing career, working briefly for several New York City magazines. On the advice of some of his friends he studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse, was coached by Gerald Gordon [1], and later moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting as a career.

His current role on Stargate Atlantis is Lt. Colonel John Sheppard who leads a military force attached to the Atlantis Expedition. He has relocated his family to Vancouver, Canada, where the series is filmed. He also wrote the story for "Epiphany", a second season episode of Stargate Atlantis.

Flanigan is married to Katherine Kousi, a former actress turned painter who has recently returned to acting, since 1996 and has three young sons, Aidan, Truman [2] and Fergus [3].
