Joe Costello (Irish politician)

Joe Costello (born in Geevagh, County Sligo, July 1945) is an Irish Labour Party politician. He is a Teachta Dála (TD) for Dublin Central and is currently the Labour Party Spokesperson for Defence.
Joe Costello was educated at Summerhill College, Sligo, St Patrick's College, Maynooth and University College, Dublin. He worked as a secondary school teacher before becoming a full time public representative. Costello is currently a TD for Dublin Central. He first became involved in politics in 1985 when he joined the Labour Party. In 1989 he became involved in national politics when he was elected to Seanad Éireann. He remained there until 1992 when he was elected to the lower house of Dáil Éireann. On that occasion the Labour Party won a record 33 seats, an achievement that has never been equaled since. Costello lost his seat in the 1997 General Election but was subsequently elected to the Seanad again. Costello was re-elected to the Dáil again in 2002.
