Wikipedia:Job center

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

  • Note: the page is under construction, please add your job description. See #Random Article Patrol for an example.
  • The intention is to describe kinds of tasks that are done, not to ask for help with a specific task. See Wikipedia:Community Portal/Opentask for that.
  • The intended tone is friendly, clear, and serious, appropriate both for newbies who want to find a way to help, for old-timers who are just wondering how something gets done. If a job needs more hands, by all means, make the description attractive, just as long as you stick to Plain English.
  • One of the aims is to steer new contributors towards useful contribution, so please consider WP:BEANS when describing jobs.
  • Read the discussion and comment on the talk page.
Welcome to Wikipedia Job Center.

What do Wikipedians do?

If you are looking for a way to help, find a job that suits you, read the appropriate background pages, and be bold.
If you are looking for editors who do a particular job, find their project pages and noticeboards.
If you are here for the fuzzy feeling, stand back and marvel at the range of work that is done daily by other Wikipedians.

Random Article Patrol

anon
See Wikipedia as it really is, and learn a lot of random information

Random article patrol is a chance to appreciate how good (and how lacking) Wikipedia is. It's a wonderfully soothing experience, especially after tedious maintenance tasks.

  • Click Random article (or press alt/meta-x).
  • Proof-read and copyedit.
  • Improve the article as needed to conform to conventions and style manuals.
  • Check links to the article, fix double redirects and find articles to insert links leading to orhpaned and badly orphaned articles.
  • If you find a statement in the article surprising or suspicious, find a reference to support it, or remove it from the article.
  • Nominate bad pages for deletion, vote on the rare AfD or PROD you come across.
  • Check the articles history and talk page to see how many people you don't know work on many articles about things you never heard about. Look at their user pages and contributions to appreciate how much work is done on Wikipedia.

Stop vandals from wrecking Wikipedia
Wikipedia gets thousands of edits per day - unfortunately many of these are vandalism. As an RC patroller you are the first line of defense against such abuse, ensuring that readers of Wikipedia are not faced with vandalized content where they expected to find a useful article.

Get new spam and cruft shot on sight deleted appropriately
Some people, either acting in good faith or maliciously, create new articles which aren't suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia. By participating in new article patrol you can ensure that these articles are deleted as soon as possible. And for that rare gem of a good article right out of the gate, New Article Patrollers are in an excellent position to make sure that it's nominated for the Did You Know... section of the Main Page.

Unbiased Commentator

Talk some sense into biased editors.

Providing unbiased commentary is a great chance to improve your Wiki-relations. Instead of debating, you can read the arguments of opposing editors and suggest a compromise that is in Wikipedia’s best interest. By doing so, you will learn a lot about the policies.

  • Pick a category at Wikipedia:Requests for comment
  • Select the request that most intrigues you
  • Read the discussion on the edit in question
  • In a non-confrontational manner, suggest a compromise. Try to cite Wikipedia policies on the issue
