Joan Tollifson (1948 - present) was born in Chicago and is a lesbian American author and is a Zen Buddhist who has been affiliated with the Berkeley Zen Center, training with Mel Weitsman and Toni Packer. She is missing her right hand, a defect she was born with. Joan specializes in books on spirituality and awakening. Awakening simply to what is. Life as it is. However, she considers that most people live in a dream world and it is from this dream world one can wake up and find there true self which is reality.
