Joan Shogren

In 1963 Joan Shogren (born July 5, 1932) created a computer program that provided the computer with the basic artistic principles needed to create computer-generated art. The first public showing of computer art was held in San Jose, California at San Jose State University on May 6, 1963. (San Jose Mercury News) In 1984, Shogren (Mathis/Shogren) and her associates (Mike Mathis and Dennis Fregger) were contracted by T/Maker to produce the first "serious" clip art images designed to be used in business/organization applications. T/Maker marketed these black and white, bitmapped images through retail distribution as "ClickArt Publications." Shogren lives in Santa Clara, California.
