João Domingos Silva Pinto (born 21 November 1961 in Vila Nova de Gaia; pron. IPA: [ʒu.'ɐ̃w̃ du.'mĩ.ɣuʃ 'pĩ.tu]) is a former Portuguese football player, and current assistant coach of the FC Porto team.
A FC Porto trainee, it didn't took him much time to rise as the premier right defender in the 80's Porto and national team sides. When Fernando Gomes broke his leg before the 1987 European Champions Cup final he was picked as the captain, and reportedly only released the cup in Portuguese soil. He finally retired after the 1996/97 season, where Porto captured three titles in a row for the first time, and turned the captain armband and number 2 he owned to Jorge Costa. Given his devotion and long service for the club, which exemplifies the character required by Porto fans' for their players, he was given a place coaching the youth teams. He won nine titles, four cups, and was in the 1987-88 "trilogy" team, which won the Champions Cup, the European Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup.
International player during 13 years (from 16 February 1983, against France until 9 November 1996 against Ukraine), getting 70 caps (1 goal scored), from he captained the team in 42 occasions. This, combined with his intensity (the before mentioned episode in the '87 ECC final and leaving the field in tears after losing to Italy for the 1994 FIFA World Cup qualifiers) earned him the nickname Capitão.
The quotation he is most famous for in Portugal (prognósticos só no fim do jogo, predictions only at the end of the game) is actually a distortion of an exchange he had with a reporter.
He should not be confused with current SC Braga player João Vieira Pinto, or a former teammate, João Manuel Pinto.
His younger brother Sergio was also a footballer.
