[edit] Oddball

Why have you a fobia about Capitalized titles? Capitalization and and redirection is NOT vandalism... this is not a collection of e-mails, so even if your an Official Editor and I'm not, I'm still inproving the look of the work. This is 82.33.158.182 (talk contribs)

I was not accusing you of vandalism, just noticed that something odd was going on. I think the message I left on your talk 10 seconds before seeing this explains things more. Cutting and pasting, that's definetely something to avoid. jni 16:32, 24 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks for the removal

Thanks for removing the "glas" page! :) Was quite surprised when we couldnt find a page about "glas" so we tried to create one ourselves. If we only had checked our english spelling we would have found that there was plenty of information about "glass" :) Thanks! /JG!

[edit] Unprotected pending deletion pages

I saw the removal of the weird entry for Cornell Hangovers and Cornell University Hangovers on WP:RFD, took a look at the articles (since Jnc mentioned vfding them properly), and noticed that you added {{pending deletion}} to both. This is all well and good, of course, except that neither has been protected. —Korath (Talk) 16:49, Mar 4, 2005 (UTC)

I usually don't bother to protect them unless there's evidence they are likely targeted by vandals. When the bug gets fixed, I intend to participate to the mass deletion and after the category has been cleared, to iterate over my contribs to process all cases where the page has been edited after me tagging it. The Cornell Hangover case is somewhat special, because the VfD discussion cannot be found, so it is at least theoretically possible someone writes an encyclopedic article about it. jni 17:01, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] User:Vaoverland - administrator

Thank you for supporting my appointment as an administrator. I appreciate the pat on the back this represents. It felt nice to read the comments during the voting. Please let me know if you see something I should be doing as admin, as I intend to be fairly passive unless it is clear I should do otherwise. Thanks. Mark in Richmond. Vaoverland 20:06, Mar 6, 2005 (UTC)

You're welcome! Have fun with your new powers! jni 21:06, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Sub-page redirects

I wasn't around for the "keep sub-page redirects" discussion, it was before my time; it happened back when they decided to get rid of sub-pages. I added keep #7 when I was told of the policy by some other admins (when a case came up - I think it may have been Cambodia sub-pages, IIRC). I don't recall where the relevant policy is; I'll take a look and see if I can find it. Noel (talk) 13:16, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I spent a while looking for stuff about redirects at old sub-pages, and although I found a lot of debate about sub-pages, and some about keeping redirects to pages that were moved, I didn't find much specifically about the keeping of redirects to subpages. (It may have been discussed as part of a discussion on RfD about a specific entry, but if so I don't know which one; I looked in WP:Rfd/Precedents and didn't see anything.) There is general discussion of keeping URL's which used to work for a page continue to work, so that links to Wikipedia pages stored off-site continue to work, and that seems to have been applied to sub-pages. You can find the policy at Wikipedia:Redirect#Renamings and merges. That text was added in this series of edits by User:MyRedDice, back in the summer of 2003. Like I said, I wouldn't mind seeing these old names deleted; good luck with your campaign to get the policy changed.
I have to go do some other stuff now, I'll get to other points in your message later. Noel (talk) 03:53, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)
PS: Here's the removal of the case which prompted me to add that entry to the keep list. Note that there's no discussion of the policy here; both of us just seem to accept it. You might want to ask User:SimonP to see if he knows more about this policy. Noel (talk) 04:12, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Thanks! I'm also busy with other matters right now, but will return to this topic later. jni 08:36, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] VFD

Sorry about adding all of the pages to the VFD, i was bored and did a search to sse where my user name linked up to, found a buch from back in January, anyway figured they still met cretieria for the VFD, and mine as well let the "public" decide. --User:Boothy443 | comhrÚ 10:18, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Yeah i figured as much, and thanks, it keeps me busy. --User:Boothy443 | comhrÚ 10:27, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] My adminship

Thank you for voting for me for adminship. I appreciate the confidence you showed in me. — Knowledge Seeker 08:31, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] stubs/substubs

I'd thought that an article was eiher a substub or, when expanded, a stub — when it could gain a specific stub title. That's only because I'd never seen the combination before, though. Is there anywhere I could go for policy on this? I've looked, but it doesn't seem to be in the obvious places. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 14:55, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)

There is no firm policy I know about, and I don't think we need one. Would be instruction creep, IMHO. I have seen others use substub + X-stub combo, it's not solely my invention. Advantage is that it allows experts of X to locate the substub and expand it while still stating explicitly its substub status. The substub category is nearly useless for navigation, unlike the various stub categories. jni 15:04, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Adminship - ABCD

As you may remember, you voted neutral on my nomination for adminship in January. I have recently reapplied. You may wish to vote here. Thanks, ABCD 19:14, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your support. – ABCD 19:22, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks for the revert

I got caught by the vandal today. Oof! At least I don't have anyone sitting behind me looking over my shoulder. B-) Thanks for the revert, I was just starting to edit it when I saw the revert. slambo 20:48, Mar 18, 2005 (UTC)

You're welcome. Now you know why we RC-patrollers don't let significant others or kids to same room when we are busy with Wikipedia ;-) jni 20:54, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks!

Thanks, Jni! You banned me once, you banned me twice, but it didn't work! Why not ban me again? It's Jake0618 again. Remember me? You better discuss this thing with RickK, he's after me too. Well, there's nothing stopping me from unleashing my hoaxes on the 8th. See you around! Jake0618 under a different name: 84.154.95.210 14:34, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Have fun finding my new hoaxes among my real articles on April 8.

Oh, by the way, stop calling me a vandal. I don't vandalize articles. --84.154.95.210 15:00, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Pending deletion of Fruitafossor

Greetings, Jni. You tried to delete my article Fruitafossor. While I respect your opinion that it could well be a CNN AFD joke, I'd really like to ask where and how you got the impression that I'm a hoax contributor. I must stress that I do not write hoaxes. I expect an apology and a withdrawal of your accusation.

Will await your reply.

Most sincerely,

JakeGHz 15:15, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)

URGENT: Jni, if you are a decent person, please put our argument over Fruitafossor on hold and please pray for the Pope. Please! We can resume when he is well again. Thanks very, very much. JakeGHz 19:29, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)

To me, the one deleted revision of All Right looks like a confession... jni 11:36, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Very URGENT

Jni, I have a confession to make. Can we discuss it at my private talk page VosConclavo? It's very important; concerns hoaxes and vandalism, please reply at the said talk page ASAP. Regards - 84.154.113.120 22:48, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thanks, but not interested any more. Wrong date today. Hope you find more useful outlets for your creative energy. jni 11:36, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Summons

Salutations. Jni, you are being summoned to a discussion with an anonymous user who calls himself the Fort Bleakeley vandal. He says it is very important. You would do best to join the discussion at my talk page immediately. Please hurry. VosConclavo 11:47, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Go away. jni 11:50, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Oops, I goofed. Thanks a lot for pointing that out. I just followed User:Juntung's "cool" vote. utcursch | talk 11:52, Apr 2, 2005 (UTC)

  • Indeed, I screwed up. Thanks a lot for pointing that out. --JuntungWu 13:59, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Goodbye

Hello Jni. You didn't respond to my summons. While that may have done you some good (see the complete discussion and confession here), you have free will after all. I just want to inform you that I have withdrawn all threats and crossed my name from the Vandalism in Progress list. You have no need to bother with me anymore. Fare thee well. 84.154.123.70 21:11, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Images and media for deletion votes

  • I am contacting people who previously helped to vote to delete a generally objectionable photograph by a vote of 88 to 21, and who might be unaware that immediately after that image was voted to be deleted someone posted another which was very similar in content. My objections to this, and the previous image that was voted to be deleted might be based upon reasons far different from any that you have, but I do object to it, and consider the posting of such images to be acts of asinine stupidity, which burdens the project and its major educational aims in ways that they should not be burdened, and can be extremely detrimental to the acceptance and growth of WIkipedia's use and influence. Thus far those who I believe to be in the extreme minority of Wikipedians who would like to include these images, many who have been channeled to the voting page from the article with which it is associated have dominated the voting, 23 to 12 (as of the time that I composed this message). I would like to be somewhat instrumental in shedding a bit more light upon the issue, and if possible, helping to turn the tide against its inclusion. It might also be necessary to begin making an effort to establish an explicit Wikipedia policy against explicite photographic depictions of humans engaged in erotic, auto-erotic, or quasi-erotic activities. To my limited knowledge such images have not been accepted as appropriate anywhere else within this project, and frankly I can agree with those who are casually labeled prudes for opposing their inclusion, that they should not be. Vitally important information that might be unwelcome by some is one thing that should never be deleted, but un-needed images that can eventually prevent or impede many thousands or millions of people from gaining access to the great mass of truly important information that Wikipedia provides is quite another matter. There are vitally important distinctions to be made. Whatever your reasons, or final decisions upon the matter, I am appealing for more input on the voting that is occurring at Wikipedia:Images_and_media_for_deletion. ~ Achilles 01:15, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Your Bad impressions

The way you admnd have not dealt with this, is what will give new user a bad impression they will see users like this going around destroying stuff because they don't know what they are talking about, when they are tackled and just bluster they'll see people like yourself running to their aid because they are softly spoken vandlals or what ever the perverse critirea people like yourself use.--Jirate 17:51, 2005 Apr 7 (UTC)

[edit] 213.18.248.24

This guy has almost no worthwhile edits and a large number of garbage/vandalism edits. He's been warned five times. Isn't it about time to actually block him? At least he's on a fixed IP. TIA. Mwanner 12:43, Apr 13, 2005 (UTC)

Doesn't seem to be very active right now. Making a spelling correction to a nonsense article in VfD is not a reason to block the IP. He will be blocked by patrolling admin if he continues to vandalize. jni 12:54, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)
OK, but check out these edits:
This was all after the folowing was added to his talk page:
"This is your last warning. The next time you vandalize a page you will be blocked from editing. Gamaliel 10:23, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)"
There were two subsequent warnings added on 18 March and 8 April. Mwanner 14:10, Apr 13, 2005 (UTC)
The diffs are four months old! Unless there is current, on-going vandal activity, this does not warrant even entry in WP:VIP, much less a block. Who known how many people have been editing from that address? Who cares? Wikipedia receives thousands of garbage edits per hour, no one is interested in old minor issues. I suggest you take a peek at Special:Recentchanges to see what's going on, you don't have to wait for long to spot some fresh vandals to fight! jni 14:33, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)
The newest was yesterday. So I guess the "next time you vandalize you will be blocked" is meaningless. BTW, someone has been deleting votes for deletion on the Steven Vu article. Mwanner 17:16, Apr 13, 2005 (UTC)
You are missing the point here. We administrators do not have any special authority to act as judges over old misdeeds. I will use the tools like {{test3}}-messages and blocks against anyone, whether anon or not, that tries to disrupt Wikipedia. The messages serve as a warning to others that this address has caused some trouble in past, so other users can more easily figure what to do about any new activity. No one is expecting the messages to cumulate over months and then automatically result in a block. The blocks are just a tool, not punishment. I will check the status of Steven Vu occasionally to make sure its VfD is conducted properly. jni 05:03, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Vanity

jni, I see you've participated in Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Silly Goose Productions. You've probably noticed that its backers are (backer is) citing Wikipedia:Vanity page. The latter strikes me as confused at best. Normally I'd just go in and change it, but I'm not sure how proper it is to make a unilateral change to a page with the (slightly bizarre) {{semipolicy}} tag even when it's not being cited; now that it is being cited in a VfD (even if only by one or more sockpuppets), changing it seems worse.

I've written up one objection on Wikipedia talk:Vanity page. I could have written more. If you have time, take a look.

(If this is worth a reply, please write it either there or here rather than on my own talk page. Thanks. ) -- Hoary 09:43, 2005 Apr 18 (UTC)

[edit] My adminship: thanks!

Hi Jni. Thanks very much for your vote for my RfA. I promise to be prudent, wise, sagacious and totally unilateral in all my admin affairs. I should say that I am very pleased at the number of people who supported me – it's very nice to know I'm making a positive impact. Cheers again, Smoddy (Rabbit and pork) 21:05, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] My RFA

Thank you for your comments on my RFA. Although the voting period just ended with a 14-8-2 vote, I will admit once and for all that I used it more as an evaluation of myself. Being promoted would have been a plus. I was more interested in who voted, when they voted, who would change their votes and when, and the comments I would receive. Hopefully I will correct the main weakness that was raised by those who voted oppose -- that I was too eager to put articles on VFD. Also, I will try to interact more with those Wikipedians who did not vote at all.

As for next month, I don't know if I will nominate myself again. I might not think about it until somebody else puts me up there on RFA at a later date. Eventually, I see myself as an admin, especially as the number of articles and users continues to grow. Thanks again and good luck at improving this vast archive of free knowledge. [edit] spambot

I don't think it ever really goes away. We can probably expect it back within a couple of weeks. Anyways I've gone ahead and unprotected as you suggested (and deleted pages that were created solely for the purpose of being protected). -- Curps 16:02, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

Thanks! I'll add the affected pages to my watchlist to see if the spammer comes back. jni 09:49, 7 May 2005 (UTC)
