JMRI

JMRI (Java Model Railroad Interface) is an Open-source software effort to produce software for the model railroad hobby.

The JMRI software is a suite of applications in a single download. The two most popular tools are DecoderPro for programming DCC decoders, and PanelPro for controlling layouts. Don't worry about trying to get each part separately - they're all bundled together. Also, you do not need to use each part of the suite to get a specific task done - that is you don't need to setup the automation part if all you want is to quickly program your decoders.

In 2005 and 2006, JMRI attracted a lot of attention from the open source community because of a legal dispute between the developers and Matt Katzer. Katzer attempted to damage JMRI by filing continuation patents after the JMRI code was published, by registering other's trademarks as his own domain names (Cyber squatting), and distributing JMRI files as his own in violation of copyright law.
