[edit] History and name:

The work on JLime began in late 2003 due to the need for a working Linux distribution on the HP 6xx Jornada platform. The idea behind JLime is a distribution that brings speed and portability to the Jornada.

Founder Kristoffer Ericson on why to use Linux for handhelds:

"On old machines support will sooner or later disappear leaving you with an aging machine without the possibility to interact with changing environments. In general companies will give out updates for their systems (wince) for a couple of years after the termination of the machine, but once they stop you have no way to produce those needed upgrades yourself. So, as time goes by your machine grows more and more obsolete.

Now if you wanna keep up with the gadget frenzy you could always buy a fresh machine and start all over. Or, you could change to an alternative. Myself I've never found a machine i liked so much and I would very much like to keep using it for awhile longer."

In early February of 2006 the JLime site was renovated by the JLime forum user 'chazco'. A few months later the new Donkey distribution was released, and made JLime the only known Jornada Linux distribution with a working on-device installer (by users chazco and B_Lizzard).

[edit] Package Management:

JLime uses a minimalistic tool of APT called ipkg to handle packages (see Package management system), it can install/remove/update through any existing internet connection or locally. Packages are pulled from so called feed repositories and dependencies are handled automatically.
