[edit] Tribal Realignments prior to merge

  • The first twist ever was a swapping of tribe members. This has happened six times in the first eleven seasons. All-Stars, Vanuatu, and Guatemala) Guatemala did this the earliest, on day nine. The four tribes in Panama rearranged into two by means of a redraft.

Season Type Day number moved old numbers new numbers selection method
Borneo none
Australia none A switch was reportedly considered during production, but when the fourth immunity challenge meant the tribes would be uneven (7 vs. 5), that was the end of it.
Africa surprise switch 13 6 6-6 6-6 A tree mail asked each team to send the three "best" tribe members for what was implied to be a challenge
Marquesas random switch 10 6 8-5 8-5 Players were instructed to stand on one of 13 wooden discs, each of which had a buff underneath.
Thailand mutiny 14 none 7-5 7-5 Players were given one minute to decide whether to switch tribes prior to a reward challenge
The Amazon draft 14 6 6-6 6-6 Tree mail instructed tribes to send their youngest to a location. After an overnight retreat, Jenna Morasca and Dave Johnson were instructed to use nameplates select new tribes, alternating men and women.
Pearl Islands "kidnapping" 15 1 Rupert Boneham 8-5 7-6¹ for tribal council, 6-6 for reward challenge, 7-5 after that. The Morgan Tribe won immunity and selected a member of the Drake tribe to skip tribal council and compete in the next reward challenge.
Outcast Tribal Council 19 2 4-4-6 5-5 Because the Outcasts defeated both other teams in a challenge, they elected two players to return to the game. Lillian Morris and Burton Roberts randomly drew buffs that returned them to their original tribes.
All-Stars dispersal draft 13 4 5-5-4 7-7 After a reward challenge, the first place and second place tribes alternated selection of players from the third place tribe.
Random Switch 19 9 6-4 5-5 Players randomly drew buffs. All but one (Amber Brkich) selected the other tribes buff.
Vanuatu Chris Daugherty 34 Male Ohio 5-2 Twila Tanner (Missouri)

Guatemala Danni Boatwright 30 Female Kansas 6-1 Stephenie LaGrossa (NJ).

¹ then after tribal council, 6-6 for reward challenge, 7-5 once returned.
