JKara

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

JKara is a Bulletin Board System (BBS), which has been developed from scratch in Java. The intended goal has been to become an open source successor of KaraNet that had become unmaintainable due to compilation problems after a compiler update.

On July 16, 2004 JKara suffered from a hardware failure. As a result, the old system has become unusable and a new version of JKara had been brought to life in order to replace it. However, this new version had become plagued with several bugs. Major issues of this first version have been several bugs throughout the system as well as poor performance issues (the system has been operating at a slow speed). Furthermore, some features of the former version have not been implemented yet.

The sudden shift of importance (it has become the only running system), as well as the fact that several problems have not occurred on the test system, but turned out with real world workload, motivated the development team to spend a substantial part of their leisure time into improving the whole system.

[edit] KaraNet

KaraNet is the biggest Bulletin board system (BBS) in Austria[citation needed]. Originally established in 1994, the system as users knew it "died" on July 16, 2004 - after 10 years of serving 24/7 - due to hardware failure.
