Jimmy Neutron

This article is about the character. For the series, see The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius.

James Isaac "Jimmy" Neutron (voiced by Debi Derryberry) is a fictional character in the TV series The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius and the movie Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. He is the main and the title character of both the movie and the TV series. His name is a spoof of the scientist Isaac Newton's, and is also based on James Chadwick who was nicknamed "Jimmy Neutron" for his discovery of the neutron. He is a ten-year-old genius inventor but his inventions seem to cause more destruction than anything and it is usually up to him to stop them. He lives in fictional Retroville, Texas, with his robotic dog, Goddard (named after Robert H. Goddard, a pioneer in modern rocketry), his father, a bumbling duck-lover Hugh and his mother, a neat freak Judy Neutron. His finally now-girlfriend is none other than Cindy Vortex.

Jimmy's full name is James Isaac Neutron, but only his mother has used his full name -- usually after his latest invention leads to disaster. His father calls him "Jimbo" and Cindy Vortex, an extraordinarily intelligent girl from Jimmy's class, often refers to him as Nerdtron, Spewtron, King Cranium, and other such names. Jimmy's best friends are Carl Wheezer and Sheen Estevez.

[edit] Background

Jimmy has an exceedingly high IQ. He creates many inventions that are often unstable or dangerous and lead to putting his friends or the entire town under attack by various forces. He has a disproportionately large head in order to house his large brain, something which almost everyone comments on--particularly Cindy. Whenever he needs to come up with an idea, he will urge his brain on, saying "Think, think!" After saying this, a short clip shows Jimmy's brain and an image of a scene that happened earlier in the episode. Then Jimmy will shout, "Brain Blast!" and give the solution that saves the day.

Most of Jimmy's inventions result in unintended consequences. Inventions like his robotic dog, Goddard, a Cheese Ray that can transform anything into cheese, a time machine, and Nanobots are some examples of his creations. He has several gum and candy based inventions, which include "Neutronic air gum" that allows humans to breathe underwater, gum that when chewed allows one to memorize whole books, and candy that uses all the flavors and after eating one piece is so good that it creates a physiological need in humans. He has several inventions to help him with transportation, the most shown being his flying rocket and his hovercar. He also has a Neutronic Game Pyramid which allows people to be in their favorite video game, and an extensive lab under his clubhouse accessible via hair DNA scan.

[edit] Relationships with other characters

Carl Wheezer and Sheen Estevez are Jimmy's two best friends. They are almost always by his side. They accompany Jimmy on just about every one of his adventures. Even though they are obsessed over llamas and Ultralord, respectively, they find life rather dull when Jimmy isn't around to liven things up with one of his inventions gone awry. Normally, they play the idiots to Jimmy's genius and are sometimes the ones to either solve the problem with some comment, or cause the trouble. Timmy Turner is one of Jimmy's Inter-Dimensional Pals, others include Danny Phantom and SpongeBob SquarePants. Jimmy and Timmy met in The Jimmy Timmy Power Hour, in the The Jimmy Timmy Power Hour 2 they hated each other since they kept fighting over Cindy Vortex, but they became friends in The Jimmy Timmy Power Hour 3, and have remained so ever since.

Enemies Jimmy has run into some regular villains in his show. First there are the Yokians, egg-chicken related aliens who also appeared in the movie, Professor Finbarr Calamitous, an evil genius who can never finish anything, and the rich young snob Eustace Strytch, among others. He also has an evil clone which is stuck in another dimension.

Although he isn't an Ultralord fan, like Sheen, Jimmy has his own action-hero that he looks up to, the super-spy guy named Jet Fusion, who stars in many movies shown in the Retroville Theater, and actually is a real spy whose movie titles are arguably spoofs of James Bond fame (this can be seen in one episode, where a movie starring Jet Fusion is played, called "Die Again Tomorrow Forever", an obvious parody of the James Bond Movies Die Another Day, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Diamonds are Forever ).

[edit] Super powers

In the episode N-Men, Jimmy, Cindy, Carl, Libby, and Sheen get super powers by having their spaceship go through the Van Patten Radiation Belt. Jimmy didn't have a superhero name when he had his powers. But the changes that occurred when he got his powers were: his skin turned orange and his hair turned green, he smelled like fruit, and when he got angry he turned into a big strong monster, based on a combination of The Hulk and the Thing. His original outfit resembles The Green Lantern.
Cindy's superhero name was Special Girl. She could fly, had super strength, and had X-ray vision; based on Supergirl.
Carl's superhero name was Burp Boy. He had super burps capable of destroying really strong objects; possibly based on Banshee but is dressed in a costume similar to Plastic Man.
Libby's superhero name was Invisible Sister. She could turn invisible and could generate forcefields; based on Invisible Woman.
Sheen's superhero name was Vibrating Lad. He could vibrate super fast allowing super speed.; based on The Flash.

[edit] Birthday

His birthday is March 14 (Albert Einstein's birthday. Pi Day) (as a connection to The Fairly OddParents, Denzel Crocker lost Cosmo and Wanda, his fairy god parents, on March 15). His birth year is probably 1992[citation needed]; however, in the 2001 movie, the month tag on Goddard's license plate expired in October, possibly meaning that he was born in October.

Another possible date for his birthday is in late spring / early summer, given that in the episode when he hypnotized his parents to believe his birthday was actually a few weeks earlier to get presents, his punishment was to scrub the school's floors during summer school. The placing of the birthday in late spring / early summer comes from the fact that the punishment most likely came shortly after he committed his mischief.

[edit] Criticism

Jimmy Neutron has been noted to use a large amount of spoofs and parodies of other series, so much so that very little of the series is actually original content much to the annoyance of fans[citation needed]. Because of all the parodies/spoofs the show has been judged to be very unoriginal, one episode in particular due to an excessive number of clear references to popular movies like The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and other pop culture references. [citation needed]

[edit] Trivia

  • Without the hair, Jimmy is shorter than Cindy, as seen in many episodes when Cindy calls Jimmy small fry, short, etc.
  • The character Jimmy Neutron is based on the scientist Isaac Newton (note Jimmy's full name:James Isaac Neutron).[citation needed]
  • in "Retroville 9," Chuck is on Butch's baseball team, but in "Hall Monster," it said he moved.

[edit] Movie Mistakes

In the Jimmy Neutron's Movie, when Jimmy introduces his parents to the Yokians using the communication satellite, he says, "These are my parents. This is Mom and this is Dad." But, he points to his dad in the picture first then his mom, or it could possibly just be a joke that he accidentally points to his dad then his mom.
