Jim Hill High School is a public high school located in Jackson, Mississippi, hosting the state's only International Baccalaureate (IB) program, which is a "vigorous" course dedicated to educating its students in worldly academic excellence. The school is known, among other things, for being the only one in the state to host the IB program; the Jim Hill Choir, which is noted for having travelled widely and ranking among the top choirs in the world; and its esteemed JROTC program SOAR programs that are hosted there. Lydia Haynes is the current principal of Jim Hill, replacing Dr. Earl Watkins in 2002. Barbara Hilliard is the current IB coordinator.
[edit] Brief history
Jim Hill was founded in 1912 by James Hill, hence the name "Jim Hill" High School, for the establishment of a secondary institution for African Americans in the Jackson, Mississippi area. The current building was constructed in the 1960's. The International Baccalaureate Program hosted there was established in 1992.
[edit] Text from Jim Hill's Homepage
The mission of Jim Hill High School is to provide a comprehensive program that promotes the development of the "whole student" by helping each student BELIEVE in himself, ACHIEVE his goals, and SUCCEED in life. This will be done through the following areas of interaction:
Facilitating a well-balanced, instructional program that demands and releases the creativity and intelligence of all students and staff in academia, technology, fine arts, and athletics through programs such as ninth-grade transitioning, Tech Prep, International Baccalaureate, and Vocational Education.
Developing and maintaining a collaborative partnership among all members of the school's community for the support of high student achievement, increased school attendance, and the overall development of students.
Ensuring the wellness and safety of students and staff. Attracting and retaining high quality faculty and staff members by creating opportunities for professional growth and meaningful input, establishing the means to efficiently fulfill responsibilities, providing security of employment, and instituting systems of affirmation.
Implementing a system of long-range planning that is based on the collection and review of school data and anecdotal information.
