Jiménez
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jiménez (archaic Ximénez) is a surname of Spanish origin. It is a patronymic construction from the Spanish given name Jimeno plus the suffix -ez, meaning "son [of]". It follows the same pattern as Enríquez meaning "son of Enrique", or its English equivalent, Henderson, meaning "son of Henry". Variants of the surname include the archaic Ximénez, as well as Jimenes, Ximenes, Giménez and Gimenes.
In Spanish orthography, when the stress of a word falls on the penultimate syllable and the word ends with an "N", "S" or a vowel, the word need not carry a diacritic on the vowel of the stressed syllable (in this case é). In English orthography, all variations are commonly written without the diacritic (Jimenez, Ximenez, Gimenez, Jimenes, Ximenes, and Gimenes.)
The most archaic form of the surname able to be traced goes back to the Navarrese dynasty begun by Sancho Ximénez, who eventually gained power in Aragón, Sobrarbe, Ribagorza, Castile, León, and Galicia. The dynasty ended with (Sancho the Strong) upon his passing in 1234.
