From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jesse Frederick Keeler (born November 11, 1976 in Toronto) is a Canadian musician. He is perhaps best known as the bassist of former Canadian rock band duo Death from Above 1979, as well as being one half of the electronic music group MSTRKRFT.

Although Keeler's rise to fame came through Death from Above 1979, he is currently focusing on MSTRKRFT. In one interview he was noted as saying, "Dance music was what I wanted to make in the first place." [1]

[edit] Biography

Keeler first started off playing in many different local Toronto bands, his first most popular project being Black Cat #13. Once Black Cat split, he formed his own 7-piece music project, Femme Fatale. Though the live band broke up, Keeler recorded all 3 of the released EPs himself, with production work from longtime friend Al Puodziukas (AKA "Al-P"), a longtime friend of Keeler's, whom he would later go on to form MSTRKRFT with.

While looking for a more skilled drummer than himself while working on Femme Fatale's EP Fire Baptism, Keeler got ahold of Sebastien Grainger, another Canadian musician. Playing together for the EP gave the two the idea of starting a band, which eventually became Death from Above 1979.

After touring extensively for DFA1979's second release, You're a Woman, I'm a Machine, the band took time off. Keeler finished building MSTRKRFT studios in East York, Toronto, and started up MSTRKRFT along with producer Al-P. On August 3rd, 2006, DFA1979 officially announced their breakup via their website, making MSTRKRFT more or less Keeler's full-time occupation.

[edit] Current occupations

Currently, Keeler and Al-P are touring with MSTRKRFT, having released their debut LP The Looks on July 18, 2006.

According to June 2006 interview, Keeler revealed that he is also playing bass for Queens of the Stone Age on their upcoming album. When asked if he would also tour with the group, Keeler admitted, "I don't know if I'm going to go on tour with them, I kind of told them I didn't want to." [2] It was later found out that Keeler will not be recording with Queens of the Stone Age due to recording conflicts.
