Jerusalem Light Rail

The Jerusalem Light Rail project consists of initially one and in a later phase possibly multiple light rail lines to provide fast and efficient public transportation in Jerusalem.

The first line is currently under construction and scheduled for completion in 2008. It will run from Pisgat Ze'ev in the northeast south along Road 60 until Yaffo Street, from where it will follow Yaffo Street in a western direction until the Jerusalem Central Bus Station. Then it will continue to the southwest along Herzl Boulevard to the Beit HaKerem neighborhood.

Special carriages are being constructed by the French Alsthom company. They are being built according to specific Israeli security needs: all parts of the engines will be encapsulated in the skin of the carriages, so that there are no parts sticking out, out of fear that explosives could be hidden there. The carriages will also have bulletproof windows.
