[edit] School Structure
The school currently has a student population of approximately 1160, with roughly 290 in the primary school and 870 in the secondary school. It is divided into five ‘mini’ schools: Early Years and Junior School in the primary department, and Middle School, Upper School and Sixth Form making up the secondary school. Upon admission into the school, students are also placed into one of four 'Houses: Blue, Red, Yellow or Green.
Each 'mini' school has its own director or Head of School, each year level its own coordinator, and in the secondary school, students are allocated to a tutor group based on their House where their academic progress is monitored and pastoral care is provided.
110 teaching staff are employed, the majority of whom are expatriates hailing from the United Kingdom, Australia, Europe, Africa, Malaysia, the Philippines, Canada and New Zealand.
[edit] Education
In keeping with the national British curriculum the school follows, students complete the IGCSE examinations in Year 11 and the GCE A Level examinations in Years 12 and 13, or Upper Sixth Form.
JIS offers its students access to school facilities that are impressive by national standards, and prides itself on the fact that most of these facilities are not available, and certainly not as grand, in the government-run local public schools. JIS has an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a football field, a gymnasium, 9 science laboratories, art studios for both primary and secondary school sites, 15 computer suites, 2 music suites and a digital recording music studio and a recently refurbished library with a collection of over 30,000 titles. The school also provides a security guarded Boarding House located within walking distance of the school for students residing overseas.
JIS places a strong emphasis on its well-rounded curriculum. Language is compulsory until Year 11, and language options include Bahasa Melayu, French, Chinese and Spanish. Music is also compulsory up to Year 9, and the music department offers an Instrumental Music programme, where students are given the opportunity to receive tuition in a particular instrument of their interest. All students from Kindergarten to Year 13 participate in Physical Education classes, and JIS's sporting clubs and teams, range from football (soccer), swimming, basketball and netball. JIS participates in the annual FOBISSEA competitions against other international schools in the South East Asian region.
Through the experience of living and working with young people from many different countries, the school's aim is to broaden students' awareness of other cultures and countries, promote international understanding, and provide a well-rounded education.
