Jeremiah Tower

Jeremiah Tower was a founding chef in the 1970s at Alice Waters' Chez Panisse restaurant in Berkeley, California. He is widely credited as one of the creators of both New American Cuisine and California Cuisine. Both feature local ingredients usually served in season. Initially these cuisines used American ingredients with French techniques. Later, Asian and Italian influences were also incorporated.

In 1984, Tower opened his own restaurant, Stars, in San Francisco. It was an overnight sensation. Numerous American chefs worked at Stars, among them Mark Franz, Mario Batali, Tim Grable, Emily Luchetti, and Jerry Traunfeld. The restaurant was among the top-grossing restaurants in the United States for close to a decade.

Tower's first book, New American Classics, won a James Beard Award in 1986 for "Best American Regional Cookbook." In 1996, Tower won the Beard Award for best chef in America.

Tower also opened branches of Stars restaurant in Napa Valley and Singapore. He opened The Peak Cafe in Hong Kong in the 1990s. He is presently living in New York City where he writes cookbooks.

Tower is a Harvard graduate with a degree in Architecture.
