Jennifer Culture

Jennifer Culture (previously known as Second Coming) was one of the most popular bands in South Florida during the mid-90's. Their highly critically acclaimed fusion of funk, hip-hop and rock made for several comparisons to Living Colour, though this was largely visual association based on frontman Byron Warren (lead vocals/guitar) and his dreadlocks. The band drew heavily from seventies funk and eighties art-rock (popular covers included Funkadelic's "Alice In My Fantasy", Prince's "Erotic City", and Talking Heads' "Once In A Lifetime"), and the heavier sounds of contemporaries like Helmet and Soundgarden. Based in Miami, the group also consisted of J.Kim Godard (guitar/vocals), bassist/vocalist Seth Horan, and drummer Ed Toth, the latter two of whom went on to play in different situations including Vertical Horizon (together), and separately in Darwin's Waiting Room, and The Doobie Brothers. Jennifer Culture released one self-titled album in 1995, mixed by Lee Popa. Upon Toth's departure, he was replaced for the band's last Miami shows with Lazaro Lazo. Upon relocating to New York City in 1995, Jennifer Culture enlisted drummer Scott Garopolo as a full time member. Horan was replaced with bassist Matt Mizenko, and the group continued on in the New York scene through the late 90's.

After the group's demise, Godard moved to Boulder, Colorado and formed fortywatt. Warren and Garopolo played together in Pillow Theory, and then in a Byron Warren solo project.
