Jelly's Last Jam

Jelly's Last Jam is a Broadway musical based on the life of jazz musician Jelly Roll Morton. The musical's book was written by George C. Wolfe incorporating several of Morton's compositions with lyrics by Susan Birkenhead.
The musical opened at Broadway's Virginia Theatre on April 26, 1992, starring Gregory Hines as Morton and Tonya Pinkins as Anita. It ran for 569 performances and closed on September 5, 1993.

Jelly's Last Jam was nominated for 11 1992 Tony Awards, winning three: Best Actor in a Musical (Hines), Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Pinkins), and Best Lighting Design. Other awards for which it was nominated included Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Choreography.
In addition, it was nominated for 11 1992 Drama Desk Awards, winning six: Outstanding Book of a Musical, Outstanding Actor in a Musical, Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical, Outstanding Orchestral/Musical Adaptation, Outstanding Lyrics, and Outstanding Lighting Design.
