Jehangir Karamat
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
General Jehangir Karamat (Urdu: جہانگیر کرامت) was Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States since November 2004. He is also one of very few Chiefs of Army Staff to have resigned over a disagreement with his civilian superiors.
General Karamat is a graduate of the National Defence College, the Command and Staff College, and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, U.S.A. He has a Masters degree in International Relations.
He retired as Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff, and as Chief of Army Staff in October 1998. His assignments have included being Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) and Chief of General Staff. He has also commanded troops in Saudi Arabia.
Since his retirement, General Karamat has been a visiting fellow at CISAC Stanford University, and the Brookings Institution, Washington D.C. He was part of a U.N.-sponsored study on Afghanistan, and is Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Islamabad Policy Research Institute. He has been Colonel Commandant and Colonel-in-Chief of the Pakistan Armored Corps. He was also President of the Pakistan Polo Association. His parent cavalry regiment is the 13th Lancers.
General Karamat's name was first mentioned as a replacement for Ambassador Ashraf Jehangir Qazi around the end of September 2004, when Mr Qazi was appointed by Kofi Annan, the Secretary General of the United Nations, to be his Special Representative to Iraq. The October 1, 2004 report on a website (see link below) appeared the same day.
On March 23, 2006, Pakistani media reports said that Ambassador Karamat would be replaced by retired Major General Mahmood Durrani. The reports said that it's not clear why Ambassador Karamat, who took his post on a two-year contract, would be returning home after a year and a half. Daily Times
