[edit] Age and basketball

An anonymous editor (IP 24.5.230.51) recently added this:

Jeff just happens to be 66 years old and is a mediocre, but very patient, basketball coach.

A few minutes later, an anonymous AOL user (IP 205.188.116.203) changed it to this:

Jeff just happens to be like 66 years old and is a very patient, focused basketball coach for youngsters.

I've removed it, for several reasons:

  • It's uncited. If Jeff McCarthy coaches basketball, we should have a citation to verify it. Same for his age.
  • Whether he's "mediocre", "patient" or "focused" are all statements of opinion, and as such should be either avoided or cited (e.g. "The Amateur Basketball Coach Review called McCarthy "very patient and focused"," or something like that, if it's really notable.
  • It's unencyclopedic in style. If we can find a citation for McCarthy's age, the Manual of Style says that it's better to list his birthdate than his age (so that it doesn't need to be constantly updated). So if he is 66, the article should begin Jeff McCarthy (born 1940) is an American character actor..."

Please note that if we can find a citation for either his birthdate or him being a basketball coach, these facts can be added to the article; but they shouldn't be added without citation. Thanks! —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 07:09, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
