Mr. Saffin said Jeannie did not cry out or move, but merely sat there with her hands in her lap. [...] Jeannie's mental condition, her body's production of endorphins, the subsequent shock, and her eventual semi-conscious state may all have played a part in minimizing her response to pain.

Seems to contradcit this part:

... [Nickell's] critique implicitly asks readers to accept that [...] Jeannie did not notice or react as the ember fell on her, or as it smouldered into flame.

The second part could be better phrased, so that it doesn't contradict. --Melissia 20:06, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
