Jeane (ジーン) is a recurring character in the Suikoden role playing game series for the Playstation and Playstation 2. When recruited she acts as your headquarters runemaster. She has appeared in every game of the series so far even despite Suikoden 4 taking place 150 years before the Gate Rune War.

[edit] Statistics

Name: Jeane
Origin: Unknown
Age: Unknown
Height : 163 cm
Race: Human (?)
Rune: Charm Rune
Wars involved in: Island Liberation War, Sun Rune War, Gate Rune Wars, Dunan Unification War, Second Fire Bringer War

[edit] Weapon

Jeane is useable as a battle character starting with Suikoden IV, and her weapon is a rod. However, as a Rune Sage, she is far more powerful as a spellcaster than fighter.

The make up of her rod is a simple long rod that has a cylindrical shape and a wider cylindrical shape at the near top of the rod. This makes it more like a bludgeoning mace. However, it is still very thin. As the level of her weapon increases, her weapon changes in shape as if it were surrounded by ice crystals, such that the crystals form zigzagging crystals that form into a long rod.

These are its names as the weapon is improved:

  • Rod (LVL 1-5)
  • Silver Rod (LVL 6-11)
  • Crystal Rod (LVL 12-16)

[edit] Abilities

In all of the Suikoden RPGs, Jeane's primary role is to serve as your stronghold's Rune Sage. She sells runes and can remove and equip them to your party members. In Suikoden V she also can convert runes into spell scrolls (a service provided by different characters in other games).

Jeane also usually provides magical support during the large-scale tactical battles, doing great damage to enemy units with her Thunder Magic.

Jeane can join parties as a support character in Suikoden III. Her [Rune Sage] ability lets you access her rune shop menu wherever you are, and additionally her presence will improve spellcasters' chanting times.

In Suikoden IV and Suikoden V, she can join parties as an active battle character. In these games she is equipped with a permanently affixed "Charm Rune," which sometimes causes enemies to protect her instead of attack. Although it is removable, she also comes with a Lightning Rune and is a very powerful Lightning Magic caster. She has strong affinities for the other runes as well. Additionally, in V she retains her ability to allow the party to access her Rune Shop anywhere.

[edit] Mystery

Jeane is one of the more mysterious characters in the game, along with Yuber, Pesmerga, Viki, and Leknaat. She has appeared in all the games with the exception of Suikogaiden vol. 2, but very little is ever revealed about her past or background. The games she has appeared in span over centuries, yet she appears to never age.

When the creators of Suikoden were interviewed, they mentioned that, "All of Jeane's family look alike," though this appears to have been said in a humorous light. Nonetheless, some believe that Jeane has family members all over the world with her exact appearance and personality traits (giggling frequently, answering questions evasively, and knowing a great deal about runes). Other players believe that Jeane is the same person in all the Suikodens. Many recurring characters, including Viki, Nash, and Futch, seem to believe she is the same person. Nash notes that she "never seems to change." In Suikoden V, Genoh perceives her to be of great age, but is confused by her youthful appearance.

When you ask detectives to find out more about her, they are never able to provide any information beyond the obvious. The more deeply you ask them to prod, the more they will seem to be confused, as if they have been spellbound. Some even seem too frightened to continue their investigation. Suikoden IV has "confessionals" instead of investigations; of course, Jeane "confesses" nothing but seems amused by the scenario.

Jeane also has a Charm Rune on her which may cause men--and perhaps even some women--to be very fascinated by or attracted to her (though she seems to manage to do that on looks alone). Some have wondered if it is the Charm Rune itself that causes her to appear so voluptuous and beautiful.

In Suikoden V, Jeane was given a deeper role to play within the game and participates to a small degree in the plot. She seems to have met Zerase before, and the mysterious "Bearer of the Stars" seems to respect Jeane's considerable power as a rune master. Jeane can apparently "force" some runes onto a bearer that usually can only be possessed by a person whom the Rune chooses(i.e., the Twilight Rune). This has some limitations--she cannot do such a thing with the Sun Rune (although on the other hand, she may have only pretended to not be able to force-activate the Sun Rune due to the destruction it could cause). She also seems to have a connection to very ancient ruins in Falena which used to be from the Old Armes Kingdom, which was destroyed by the Sun Rune a very long time ago.

[edit] Trivia

  • Animals seem to perceive her differently, possibly suggesting she may have a "true form" not revealed to human senses. This does not seem to include sentient "animals" such as Genoh.
  • The designers changed Jeane's hair color in Suikoden V to prevent confusion between her and the voluptuous, silver-haired Arshtat Falenas. In this game her hair is pink.
  • The ever-evasive Jeane is your "Advanced" opponent in Linfa's "Blind Man's Bluff" card game in Suikoden V.
  • She was briefly a teacher at the Green Leaf Academy during the Dunan Unification war.
  • Jeane has run many Rune Shops all over the world. They have been located in (in order of the games) Antei (Scarlet Moon Empire/Toran), Two River (Jowstone/Dunan), The Brass Castle (Zexen), Na-Nal (Island Nations), and Sol-Falena and Lelcar (Falena).
  • Some speculate that Jeane is in fact a spy of Hikusaak, the Harmonian leader, or is in fact Hikusaak himself possibly disguised.
  • Others said that she's some kind of a creature like Yuber, Luc and Sasarai who bestows a true rune inside. However, Konami has confirmed that Jeane does not have a true rune.
