Jean Lecanuet

Jean Adrien François Lecanuet, born March 4, 1920, Rouen, died February 21, 1993.

Born in a family of very modest conditions, he oriented towards studies of literature. He received his diploma at the age of 22, becoming the youngest agregé in France.

  • 1942 Agrégé of Philosophy. Professor of Philosophy in Lille and Douai.
  • 1943 Participates Résistance movement. In August 1944, arrested by Germans, manages to escape.

After Liberation, he is general inspector at the Ministry of Defence.

  • 1945-1951 Under Fourth Republic, helds ministerial posts for numerous times (11 posts in 10 years), member of the Popular Republican Movement.
  • 1951-1955 MRP deputy of Seine-Inférieure region. Loses election in 1956.
  • 1956 Maître des requêtes in State Council (Conseil d'Etat).
  • 1959-1973 Centrist senator from Seine-Maritime
  • 1963-1965 President of MRP
  • 1965 Candidat in the French presidential election, 1965 (supported by Paul Reynaud). Sa candidature contribue à la mise en ballottage du général de Gaulle. Lecanuet obtains 3 777 120 votes (15,6 %)
  • 1966 :he founds Centre démocrate, choosing a difficult way while the form of elections favorises bipolarisation.
  • 1968 Maire of Rouen until death
  • 1972 He founds Mouvement réformateur together with Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber.

He negotiates with Pierre Messmer desistances which permit the success of the majority in the legislative elections of 1973.

  • 1973: elected deputy of Seine-Maritime.
  • 1974: he participates actively in the election campaign on favour of Valéry Giscard d'Estaing.
  • 1974-1976 Minister of Justice in Chirac's first cabinet
  • 1976-1977 Minister of State in charge of planning and l’Aménagement du territoire in Raymond Barre's first cabinet
  • 1978-1988 President of UDF
  • 1979-1988 Deputy of European Parliament
  • 1979-1988 Senator from Seine-Maritime, chairman of the Commission of Foreign Affairs and Armed Forces, function that he has already exercised between 1971 and 1973.
