Jean Canfield Building
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Jean Canfield Building is a Government of Canada office building currently under construction in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
The structure is a modest 12,305 m2 rising 3 stories and is intended to house approximately 500 civil servants. The project is under the supervision of the Department of Public Works and Government Services and is striving for what is known as Gold LEED certification, taking into consideration that it was conceived as a national showcase for sustainable and green design.
Ironically, the building is replacing a perfectly good structure (the Dominion Building) which was constructed in the late 1940s and could have been renovated at a far cheaper and less environmentally intrusive manner than the $50 million pricetag for new construction; local municipal and provincial politics "encouraged" the federal government to undertake a new building to replace the Dominion Building to spur development in the city's downtown core.
