[edit] Info from Wikipedia:Image sleuthing

  • Used in Jean-Paul Sartre
  • The image description says it's from the Dutch Wikipedia. The image description page on the Dutch Wikipedia says it's from the English Wikipedia. (The English side is correct, as seen by the upload dates.) – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 15:34, Mar 21, 2005 (UTC)
  • Seems to be a heavily edited version of this image. It's still unclear where it originally came from. The date given for the linked filed is 1948. Could be a press photo if the object in the lower right corner is a microphone. --MarkSweep 16:05, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
  • This was in the article on the site you got the picture from: " Thomas Köster, "Sartre, Jean-Paul," Microsoft® Encarta® Online-Enzyklopädie 2002 http://encarta.msn.de © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. Alle Rechte vorbehalten." Could be trouble. Nrbelex (talk) 05:18, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)
    • Does anybody speak Dutch? Babelfish won't translate this (Microsoft???) and you might need a premium subsciption anyway - or it might not exist. Nrbelex (talk) 05:21, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)
      • That's because it's German. First two sentences from Babelfish: "How can we help you? The side wished by you is not available on our Website." The rest is more of the same. —Korath (Talk) 06:17, Mar 23, 2005 (UTC)
    • Not necessarily. If the image turned out to be PD, there would be nothing wrong with it appearing both in Encarta and here. --MarkSweep 09:55, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)
  • Haha - wow that was dumb. I thought I saw a .de and figured it was Dutch. The issue remains of whether or not it can be used if it's from Encarta. We might need a person with a premium subsription to Encarta to check to see if the image is in there. If it is, since they are attempting to profit from its use, would a fair use claim be weakened? I didn't see this issue in the new 10-point guide. Nrbelex (talk) 19:18, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)
    • If it's copyrighted by Encarta, then our use wouldn't be a fair use. But if Encarta is only using the photo because it's in the public domain, or because they claim fair use of someone else's copyright, then we're fine. Maybe someone could contact Encarta and ask them? – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 17:04, Mar 25, 2005 (UTC)
