[edit] Welcome!

Hello, Jcmurphy, Welcome to Wikipedia!
I hope you like working here and want to continue. If you need help on how to name new articles, look at Naming Conventions, and for help on formatting the pages visit the Manual of Style. If you need general help, look at Help and the FAQ, and if you can't find your answer there, check the Village pump (for Wikipedia related questions) or the Reference Desk (for general questions). There's still more help at the Tutorial and the Policy Library. Also, don't forget to visit the Community Portal — and if you have any more questions after that, feel free to post them on my New-Users' Talk Page.
Additional tips:
Here are some extra tips to help you get around Wikipedia:
  • If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills, try the Sandbox.
  • Click on the Edit button on a page, and look at how other editors did what they did.
  • You can sign your name using three tildes, like this: ~~~. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too. Always sign comments on Talk pages, never sign Articles.
  • You might want to add yourself to the New User Log
  • If your first language isn't English, try Wikipedia:Contributing to articles outside your native language
Happy editing!

[edit] John Hogan

Hi Jc,

Thanks for the article on John Hogan. It looks like you've picked up on the basic idea behind disambiguation, however with biographical articles we usually disambiguate using a full name, or more often by profession, and only very rarely by dates.

One of the nice things about Wikis is that there is quite often someone who will come along and fix things up. So I will now move John Hogan (1800-1858) to John Hogan (sculptor). This will automatically create a redirect from the previous name and preserve your edit history.

The more complicated decision, is which John Hogan should take priority. For now I will leave the soldier at the prime location, and add a disambiguation link to that page.

I'll look forward to any other articles on sculptors you have up your sleave. -- Solipsist 18:24, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image attribution

Hi Jc, when adding images, please make sure that you tag them to indicate whether they are public domain, fair use, or GFDL, etc. Also, please get in the habit of indicating on the photo page where you got it from - provide an external link if you can. Otherwise, your images are likely to get deleted as possible copyright violations. Fawcett5 21:07, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I strongly second Fawcett5's advice. The act of uploading images which you do not own the copyright to, or do not have permission to release under the GFDL or compatible license, is discourteous towards Wikipedia and its contributors. We must be careful to avoid copyright violations, lest they endanger the legality of the project. By not citing your sources, you also create more work for other users who actually care about keeping Wikipedia tidy. This is disrespectful to say the least. Consider this a fair warning: if you do not amend the following images' description pages to indicate both their sources and copyright statuses within one week from now, I will list them all for deletion. Furthermore, if you continue to upload images without attribution, I may be forced to temporarily block you from editing. The following images require attribution:

[edit] Image Tagging Image:Oldtraffordaerialview2001.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Oldtraffordaerialview2001.jpg. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag, so its copyright status is therefore unclear. Please add a tag to let us know its copyright status. (If you created/took the picture then you can use {{gfdl}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{fairuse}}.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know on the image description page where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Otherwise, see Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. Thanks so much. --The JPS 14:30, 29 August 2005 (UTC)

(We need a source - just tagging as GFDL without a source is not good enough, unfortunately) The JPS 14:30, 29 August 2005 (UTC)
  • Thanks for giving a URL, but could you provide a more specific one, please, as I can't find it. We need to assess its copyright status. Has that unofficial website borrowed it from somewhere else...? The JPS 14:52, 29 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Abhainn na Gaillimhe

I was taught at school (on the banks of it) that the river is the Gaillimhe and "Abhainn na Gailimhe" is a tautology. "Cathair na Gaillimhe" (The stone enclosure on the Gaillimhe) is correct. Do you have a more authoritive source for your edit?

Hi Jcmurphy,

Can you confirm that this image is GFDL. The reason I ask is that the image also appears at [1]. Are you the original author?

[edit] Irish Newfoundlanders

Thank you for educating me about an often overlooked part of the Irish diaspora, but much of Irish Newfoundlanders reads like it should be Catholic Newfoundlanders. What about the Irish Protestants who went? I know the Orange Order were influential in Newfoundland history.

Lapsed Pacifist 20:14, 24 August 2005 (UTC)

It's not my intention to move the article, but I felt I had to point out the overly strong emphasis on Catholics. I realise Catholics were in the majority among Irish Newfoundlanders, but I think more balance is needed.

[edit] Image:Anglican Cathedral St. John's 1892.jpg

Hi JC, Welcome to the wiki! I just had a question about an image you uploaded: Image:Anglican Cathedral St. John's 1892.jpg - how do you reckon that this is covered by CanadaCopyright? That is only for works produced by the Government of Canada, and MUN doesn't count. However, if the image is really from 1892, it is in the public domain and you can use the {{PD}} tag. It would be helpful also if you could provide on the image page a link to its source online. Thanks! Fawcett5 02:53, 27 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] FPSO

Good evening Sir/Madam, about the old FPSO article.

You added the "Terra Nova FPSO schematic."

Could you now add what the terms in the schematic do, their function? I did the first two to give you an idea. But you know more about it than I (almost nothing) do.

Accommodations: sleeping quarters for the crew
Helideck: landing platform for transport helicopters
Turret area: connecting point between the FPSO and the subsea systems
Water injection: inject treated seawater for reservoir
Separation-high pressure compression: 1st stage oil-water separation
Produced water/glycol mixture: storage for glycol containing absorbed water
Separation-low pressure compression: 2nd stage oil-water separation
Power generation: gas turbine electric generators
Flare: used to burn off vent gases
Poop deck-offloading: loading/unloading area for supply ships

Also, you didn't like the size I had set for the FPSO diagram? I can't read it now, I could read it before. I am at 1024 x 768 resolution.

Thanks, WikiDon 03:17, 22 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Rush photo

While I have nothing against Rush (actually I rather like them) I have a problem with the photo you added to the Order of Canada page. All the other photos in that article feature recipients wearing the Order. What would be great is to find an image of Rush either wearing or being invested in the Order. I have left the photo there, but I think for uniformity it should either be removed or changed. Dowew 20:28, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Sources for Coat of Arms of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador

Hello, good work on Coat of Arms of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, and thanks for the contribution. However, you forgot to add any references to the article. Keeping Wikipedia accurate and verifiable is very important, and there is currently a push to encourage editors to cite the sources they used when adding content. What websites, books, or other places did you learn the information that you added to Coat of Arms of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador? Would it be possible for you to mention them in the article? Thank you very much. - SimonP 04:40, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Discussion on St. John's

Hi JC; I would certainly like to wade in on the topic of the oldest settlement in North America, but I feel that I'm not knowledgeable in that area. This image may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Cape_race_newfoundland.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. [edit] Image Tagging Image:Hampden(g).jpg

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Hampden(g).jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Vclaw 18:23, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Mile one stadium.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Mile one stadium.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, or ask them at the Image legality questions page. Thank you. Shyam (T/C) 21:15, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

A closer look at the image history reveals it was licensed as GFDL but an IP-user removed it. --Denniss 22:50, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Centrebellmontreal.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Centrebellmontreal.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a free image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. 1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ----RobthTalk 22:40, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Aaj.jpg

You have indicated that this image have been released into the public domain, however I've searched all over the source website and I can find no information to support this claim (remember full copyright is the default unless other licensing have been spesified by the copyright holder). For this reason I have tagged the image as "no license". If you have additional information on the status of this image please add it to the image page, otherwise it will be deleted in a week's time. Thanks. --Sherool (talk) 11:26, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image tagging for Image:GanderInternationalAirport911.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:GanderInternationalAirport911.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. [edit] Image:Crosssectionchurchillfalls.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Crosssectionchurchillfalls.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria.
