jbilling (pronounced Jay Billing) is an open source billing system. The software is based on the Java EE framework (formerly J2EE), which makes it cross-platform; usable in any operating system that supports Java. It runs on the JBoss and Tomcat application server. Additionally, it features the possibility to run on various database vendor engines, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, Hypersonic and Oracle.

The project was started by Sapienter Billing Software Corporation, with a code base that goes back to 2003. The company employs the core programmers necessary to update and maintain the software. It also coordinates a wide network of volunteers and users that collaborate with contribution of code, test results and new features suggestions. It profits from a service-based business model based on support and training around the billing software. The company is based in Vancouver, Canada and it owns the copyright and trademarks associated with jbilling.

jbilling is at its core a recurring billing system, targeting companies that periodically charge their customers for services. It calculates and generates the invoices, handles automatic payment processing with credit cards and notifies the customers about the status of their accounts.

It is web-based, once it is installed in a single server, it can be accessed with a web-browser from any computer in network with the server. If the server is connected to the internet, then the billing system is accessible from any computer connected to the internet.
