[edit] Origin

Her mother, Tamara Rotolo, was a waitress visiting the French Riviera in July of 1991 when she met Prince Albert during a tennis tournament. They had a two-week liaison.

When Tamara discovered she was pregnant, she reached a willing Albert - until his father Prince Rainier III ceased all contact. Rainier III was particularly upset by the fact that the child had been given the first name of his late wife.

At birth, Tamara named her Jazmin Grace Grimaldi for her paternal grandmother Grace Kelly and her father Prince Albert Grimaldi.

[edit] Onward

In the 2000s, Jazmin and her mother moved to a gated community and Jazmin enrolled in private school as Jazmin Grace Grimaldi. Tamara continued to secretly have contact with Albert and his attorney Thierry Lacoste.

On July 6, 2005, Prince Albert II confirmed the revelations regarding his son Eric Alexandre Coste.

February 2006. French magazine Voici published photographs of mother and daughter during a visit to Monaco. And in April it ran front page pictures of them leaving the Paris office of the Prince's lawyer Thierry Lacoste.

Finally, on June 1 2006, Prince Albert II admitted that he did in fact father the illegitimate Jazmin with Tamara Rotolo. The Prince noted that he had wanted to protect her identity until she was an adult (age 18).

[edit] Statements

The following terms of the agreement between Jazmin, Tamara and the Prince have been revealed publicly:

  1. Although the First American Princess by European Royal Blood (Princess Grace was by marriage) Jazmin will not be Heir to the Throne of Monaco unless Prince Albert reverses the 2002 Constitution (first change in 600 years). Under Monaco law, illegitimate descendants cannot be in line for the throne.
  2. It's been erroneously reported in some media that Jazmin will not use the surname Grimaldi though this was quickly corrected in subsequent interviews by Prince Albert, whereby the articles and the Prince himself referred to his daughter as Jazmin Grace Grimaldi.
  3. In his Paris Match (29 June - 5 July) interview which Prince Albert requested from the editor, Prince Albert said: "What matters to me is they are certain of my affection for them".
  4. Jazmin will be financially supported.

The Prince also added Jazmin is welcome to study and live in Monaco.

[edit] Life Today

Since the announcement, paparazzi have hounded her and her mother. The Prince has hired the services of Gavin de Becker to protect her. Media have paid her graduation photographer and parents of her fellow students for pictures of her at events. Jazmin has been harassed anytime she steps into public.

Jazmin Grace is described to the press as a “mature, sweet and intelligent" girl. At 14 years of age, she is currently attending St. Margaret’s Episcopal School in Palm Desert, California, where she has been an honor student.[2] She also was a soloist in a school choir that performed with singer Barry Manilow[3].

According to Le Figaro, Jazmin Grace is hesitating between two options: to become a public person, a "celebutante" in the United States and write a book, even having her story adapted as a movie, or move near Monaco and her father, lead a discreet life, and study in Europe.

In November 2006, Jazmin Grace visited eight islands in Fiji[4]on a humanitarian mission to help bring the local children assistance in education, medicine, and community development. One of her stops was at a school for the disabled and she donated 30,000 prenatal vitamins to the Savusavu Hospital on the island of Vanua Levu. She has also established a humanitarian fund for the region called Jazmin Fund. More information can be found at Jazmin Fund.

[edit] Trivia

  • The series of novels The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot, and in particular the main character Mia Thermopolis, have a story which remarkably shares some common features with the one of Jazmin Grace Rotolo. The reader can also note the use of the Renaldi (compare with Grimaldi) surname for Mia in the movie version and really Grimaldi proper in the novel (Amelia Mignonette (Mia) Grimaldi Thermopolis Renaldo).
  • Jazmin Grace's grandmother, Grace Kelly, owned a home in the Movie Colony area of Palm Springs before becoming a princess.
  • Illegitimate children are nothing new in Monaco nor would it be new for one of Albert's children to inherit his throne -- in every generation for the last 100 years a Grimaldi has had an acknowledged illegitimate child; Louis, Antoinette, Stéphanie, Albert II. Of these, six have gained rights thru legitimation, including the great grandmother of Jazmin, Princess Charlotte who obtained her rights and then by declaration ceded them to Rainier May 30, 1944.
