Jaywick

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jaywick is a small seaside town near Clacton-on-Sea, in Essex on the North Sea coast of England. It was originally intended as a holiday resort for Londoners. Many of the houses were poorly constructed and little more than shacks, intended only for short-term holiday use. However, as time passed, more and more people moved into the area and stayed.

In 1953, a storm surge flooded Jaywick, killing over 35 people. Since then, sea defences have been put in place and many precautions have been made to avoid future flooding.

Now an area of the poorest housing (known as the Brooklands area) faces demolition, with new modern housing planned. Local residents fear that the character and community of Jaywick may be lost forever.
