Jay Weatherill, Australian politician, is the current South Australian Minister for Families and Communities, Minister for Housing, Minister for Ageing and Minister for Disability. He also represents the electoral district of Cheltenham in the South Australian House of Assembly and is a member of the Australian Labor Party.
Born in the western suburbs of Adelaide, Weatherill attended Henley High School. He later studied at the University of Adelaide, graduating with degrees in law and economics. With fellow Adelaide lawyer Stephen Lieschke, he established industrial law firm Lieschke Weatherill in 1995 where he practiced law until his election to Parliament at the 2002 state election in a factional preselection over the sitting 17-year Labor MP Murray De-Laine.[1]
Immediately elevated to Cabinet, Weatherill was appointed Minister for Urban Development and Planning, Administrative Services and Local Government and was moved to his current portfolios after a cabinet reshuffle in 2004. Weatherill gained a swing of 8.7% at the 2006 election to a margin of 25.4%.
