John F. Heaps IV (commonly known as Jay Heaps; born August 2, 1976 in Nashua, New Hampshire) is an American soccer player, who currently plays right back for the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer.

Heaps played college soccer at Duke University from 1995 to 1998, spending most of his time playing forward. Heaps was named first team All-ACC all four of his years, was a three-time finalist for the Hermann Award, and as a senior was awarded the Missouri Athletic Club Award as the nation's top college player. Additionally, Heaps played, although sparingly, for the Duke basketball team under Mike Krzyzewski.

After graduating from Duke, Heaps was drafted second overall in the 1999 MLS College Draft by the Miami Fusion, and was named MLS Rookie of the Year after playing 2511 minutes for the team in midfield and defense. In his second year, Heaps was named an MLS All-Star, while registering 5 goals and six assists for the Fusion. Before the 2001 season, he was traded to the New England Revolution in exchange for Brian Dunseth. In the 2006 MLS Cup Championship, his penalty kick was saved by Pat Onstad, winning the championship for the opposing Houston Dynamo.

Heaps has spent four seasons playing in defense for the Revolution and is a solid, though unexceptional, player.

[edit] Trivia

  • Off the field, Heaps is very interested in fashion and is a "recovering shopaholic." [1]
