JIPMER is a premier medical institute of India located in Pondicherry, a Union Territory in Southern India that is located on the coast of the Bay of Bengal.

In 1823 a medical school called "Ecole de Medicine de Pondicherry" was established by the French government in Pondicherry. In November 1956, the Government of India took over the college in the wake of the ‘de facto’ transfer of Pondicherry to India. The college was upgraded to a Regional Centre and rechristened as Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) on July 13, 1964.

JIPMER is under the direct administrative control of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The three main functions of this institute are to impart quality education in undergraduate and postgraduate medical and paramedical courses, to be a trend-setter in medical research and to offer patient care of high order.

The JIPMER campus is located in the western entrance of Pondicherry and spreads over 195 acres of sloping land. The hillock on which the campus is situated is known as ‘Gorimedu’. The picturesque campus is self sufficient in several ways having well laid roads, lush green trees and plants.

Academically, the institute is affiliated to the Pondicherry University and offers a number of medical and paramedical courses. Admission to the courses are made strictly on the basis of merit through entrance examinations conducted on an all India basis. The institute offers both under-graduate and post-graduate courses in the field of medicine. In addition, there are several ancillary courses affiliated with the university of Pondicherry.
