Jason Lee Middle School, formerly known as West Intermediate School, was the first and largest of six intermediate schools funded in 1923. It was created on the former campus of the College of Puget Sound (now the University of Puget Sound) at 6th Avenue and North Sprague Avenue in Tacoma, Washington. The school, which draws from working class areas of downtown Tacoma and the south end of the city, has become locally known for having problems with violence and drugs. However, the school has been aggressive in addressing these issues, with magnet programs and a 2001 renovation that made the school one of the most modern middle schools in the state.
According to the web site, "the mission of Jason Lee Middle School is to help students realize their potential by providing rigorous academics, equitable opportunities and programs that allow for student creativity in a diverse community where all are accepted, valued and supported."
