Jasmine Simhalan

Jasmine Simhalan has been a part of Physical Theatre and Contemporary Dance with influence of South Asian Dance and Martial art forms for the past twenty years. From 1987 she has been part of most of the productions of Chandralekha group and Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company as a dancer and work shop leader, while at the same time developing her own identity as a soloist and a choreographer.

Being a trained martial artist (Kalarippayattu-oldest and most fluid Martial art form and Silambam- technique of stick movement, fighting) and dancer (Bharthanatyam, Mohiniyattam, martial dance Chau, Western Contemporary as well as Indian Folk and Film style dance) toured and performed, in productions of Wayne McGregor (UK), Richard Alston (UK), Laurie Booth (UK), Roger Sinha (Canada) and Mavin Khoo (UK) etc. Also been part of Basement Jaxx 2001 album and Emergency Exit Arts production RungaRung. In summer 2000 Jasmine both choreographed for and performed in the award winning Akademi production, Coming of Age, directed by Keith Khan.

Her work in TV and Film Includes Check by Amarjeeth Singh, Away Game-a BBC production. Chathi- her physical theatre choreography is based on the ballad of warriors of 16th century Southern India has toured in UK and Europe. Recently directed and performed Ghost- a street theatre act, video installation at Somerset house at the waterscape festival by Moti Roti., and art directed and performed SPILT- video installation for London Mela. Spare Rib- is her current work in tour to South East Asia, Europe and Americas.

Her recent award winning collaborative work Alladeen (www.alladeen.com), is produced by Builders association, New York in collaboration with Motiroti, London is a multimedia theatre work on global communication culture. -Arts led education projects for schools, universities, community groups and for special needs.

An enemy Of The People, by Henrik Ibsen, for TARA arts- movement choreography using martial technique of invisible opponents. To mark the centenary of Ibsen’s death, interprets one of his classic plays to British India. Touring Ibsen UK 2006 festival Ether-for Angika-dance movement and rehearsal director for the dance company. touring 2006-07 Arena-choreographer for physical theatre large scale outdoor project involving circus, dance and theatre artists, large moving props, and scenes. Touring 2006-08 Spare-Rib-contemporary dance choreographic commission by London Mayor, Ealing Council- also a video project in collaboration with Jamshid. 2004-currently touring Alladeen -multimedia physical theatre, web and music video project in collaboration with Builders association(New York Based Theatre Company)- Choreographer and performer toured internationally (2002-05)UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Columbia, France, Germany, Singapore, Italy, Nordic etc www.alladeen.com Elevate-London Mayors Docklands festival at Trafalgar Square, London-Choreographer and Performer 2003 I-together- collaboration with Leela Samson (renowned soloist/ choreographer from India) performed at Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, 2003 GHOST-outdoor performance at Somerset house. Conceived, choreographed and performed. also a video project in collaboration with Jamshid 2002-03 C.U.L.T.U.R.E.B.R.I.D.G.E 2004, 2005 a residency project- Martial movements and Fitness culture and its influence in contemporary choreography-looked in reference to Kalari, dance, music, Taichi and Yoga KALARI IN LONDON MELA -Kalarippayattu demonstrations for LONDON MELA many artists and students. 2003-04
