These are some examples of Japanese superstitions.

  1. If you play with fire, you will wet your bed. (It makes children become aware of the danger of fire.)
  2. If you rest just after eating, you will be a cow. (This means not to be lazy.)
  3. If a black cat crosses your path, something bad will happen.
  4. If you whistle or play a flute at night, snakes will come to you. (This means not to bother your neighbors.)
  5. If you catch a crow's eyes, something bad will happen.
  6. When you are nervous, write "human beings" in Japanese on your palm three times and pretend swallow them. It will help you to relax.
