[edit] History

Yahagi was built at Sasebo, being launched 25 October 1942 and completed just over a year later on 29 December 1943.

The Yahagi was sunk in Operation "Ten-Go" on April 7, 1945. After the giant battleship Yamato came under attack by American planes in the northern Pacific Ocean near Okinawa, commander Seiichi Ito commanded the Yahagi to cover the Yamato. The Yahagi was destroyed after a 105-minute battle against torpedoes and bombs dropped from American aircraft. After the Yahagi sank, American planes bombed the Yamato and sank the giant battleship.

From the fleet sent from Tokyo, only 4 destroyers survived operation “Ten-Go”.
